Amy Alward (nee McCulloch) is a 30-something Chinese-White author, born in the UK and raised in Canada, now based in Toronto. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. (Hons) in English, specializing in Old English and Medieval literature.
At the beginning of 2011, she signed with Juliet Mushens of Caskie Mushens Agency for her debut YA fantasy-adventure duology: The Oathbreaker’s Shadow and The Shadow’s Curse. In 2014, she signed a three-book deal with Simon & Schuster for The Potion Diaries series, the first book of which released in 2015. The Potion Diaries series has sold in eight languages around the world and was a Zoella Book Club pick in 2016. She has also contributed to the Winter Magic anthology curated by Abi Elphinstone, and has written for publications including SFX and the Guardian.
Before becoming a full-time writer and freelance editor, she was editorial director for Penguin Random House Children’s Books, where she worked with many YA and MG authors and brands (including Doctor Who and Dennis the Menace) and published the #1 international bestseller GIRL ONLINE by Youtube sensation Zoe Sugg, and its follow-up GIRL ONLINE: ON TOUR. Previously she was also commissioning editor for HarperVoyager, where she worked with some of the top SF&F authors in the world. In 2013, she was named one of The Bookseller’s Rising Stars of publishing.
An adrenaline junkie with a love of adventure travel, she’s never in the same place for long. Other addictions include coffee, ramen and really great books.
